Road to Compostela

Call me stupid, but before today I never put two and two together to figure out that 'Santiago' and 'St-Jacques' was the same thing. In St Jean Pied de Port, a stop on the road to Compostela, every house has a scallop (St-Jacques) on the front door to show that they are welcoming pilgrims travelling to Compostela in their homes. Pied-de-Port means 'foot of the pass' in Pyrenean French and it was the pilgrims' last stop before the arduous mountain crossing.

This also makes the whole charm of this little town: A lot of very courageous people with backpacks, young and old, all burnt by the sun. Respect for them. I was already tired after an hour walk with the baby in the sun.
